Easter was an important holiday in Russia when it was customary to exchange gifts.
These were often beautifully decorated eggs, because they symbolized fertility.
In 1885, Tsar Alexander III commissioned his jeweler Fabergé to create an Easter egg for his wife, Tsarina Maria Feodorovna.
Thus the first Fabergé egg was born.
