The History of the German Railways - The Royal Prussian Railway Administration (KPEV)

In the 1940s, the Prussian state established an authority to manage its state railways: the Royal Prussian Railway Administration (KPEV). Until the end of the state railway era in 1920, this authority oversaw the state railways of Germany's largest federal state.

The center of the Royal Prussian Railway Administration's route network was Berlin. This is where the most important long-distance connections converge.

The Royal Prussian Railway Administration was already the largest state-owned railway in the world at the end of the 19th century. By 1919, its network had grown to almost 37,500 kilometers. As a result of the Treaty of Versailles, the KPEV also lost approximately 4,500 kilometers of track due to the loss of territory.
Nevertheless, the KPEV was the largest of all German state railways when it was transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn.
