The Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), which emerged in April 1946 from the merger of the KPD and the SPD, developed in the following years into a Marxist-Leninist "party of a new type," whose leading bodies increasingly monopolized power within the party and state apparatus.
The eastern cemetery in the Thuringian city of Gera contains three graves of Soviet citizens. The first section is a memorial to Soviet soldiers with a monumental headstone, a separate entrance, and a large fenced-in area. Two other sections contain the graves of civilians who were transported to Germany for forced labor.
